If you’re a Great Lakes trailer boater, or any Midwesterner with a bent for watersports and the great outdoors, chances are you are familiar with Up North — that vast country stretching from northern Minnesota, across Wisconsin and Michigan, to eastern Ontario. Like a magnet, it draws the region’s population into its embrace throughout the summer months, the fall color season, during holidays and on snowy winter weekends.

ISLA ESPIRITU SANTO

While the majority of tourists become acquainted with Isla Espíritu Santo by taking day trips from the nearby city of La Paz, I sought a more intimate experience: I opted for a four-day sea-kayaking trip to this island wilderness, which has the most intact ecosystem remaining in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur and is a United Nations Biosphere Reserve.
